Robben Island
Robben Island is one of the most significant historical sites in South Africa. First used by the Dutch East India Company as a supply station it became an asylum and leper colony. Later it gained notoriety as a jail for those considered dangerous by the previous government including, for more than two decades, President Nelson Mandela, the islands most famous former prisoner.
Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom.
Visit the Historical Robben Island Museum and enjoy a tour which includes a half-hour ferry trip, a guided tour of the Maximum Security Prison, a bus tour of the historic buildings and the unique flora and fauna of the island. All guides on the island are ex-prisoners who are very willing to share their personal experiences with visitors.
Note: It is advisable to pre-book as this tour is often sold out weeks in advance.

Pilansberg Game Reserve
Pilanesberg Game Reserve is in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province,
adjacent to Sun City. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Park ranks among the largest of the parks in South Africa (it is in fact the fourth largest park) and covers an area of 55 000 hectare. The beauty of Pilanesberg is reflected in a large central lake, the Mankwe Dam. Over time, wind and water have carved a spectacular landscape with rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets. Pilanesberg National Park accommodates virtually every mammal of southern Africa. Also home to the Big Five.
